Microneedling in Portland, OR

Candela Exceed · FDA-cleared

Collagen induction on the Candela Exceed — the first microneedling device FDA-cleared for both facial wrinkles and acne scars. Not all pens are created equal, and we can prove it.

Texture is the thing photos don't fix and makeup can't fully hide: acne scars that catch the light, pores that seem larger every year, fine lines that arrived early, skin that's lost its bounce. Microneedling works on all of it the same way — by convincing your skin to rebuild itself.

If you've researched this treatment, you've also hit the noise: derma rollers on Amazon, $99 med-spa specials, influencers with pens from unclear sources. Here's the signal — microneedling is a genuinely evidence-backed treatment when the device is medical-grade and the depth, speed, and technique match your skin and your goal. That's the version we do.

Downtime
24–48 hours of pinkness
Comfort
Prescription numbing; a light sandpaper vibration
Typical plan
A series of 3–4, about 4 weeks apart

How it works: controlled injury, real collagen

Microneedling (percutaneous collagen induction) uses sterile micro-fine needles to create thousands of controlled micro-channels in the skin. Your body treats each one as a wound to heal — and heals it with fresh collagen and elastin. Repeat the cycle over a treatment series and the cumulative result is measurable: smoother texture, softened scars and lines, tighter pores, better tone.

Why the device matters — the on-label difference: we use the Candela Exceed, and the distinction is regulatory, not marketing. Exceed is the first dual-indicated, FDA-cleared microneedling device — cleared for both facial acne scars and facial wrinkles. Most pens on the market are cleared for less, or not cleared at all. When a clinic can't tell you what their pen is actually FDA-cleared to treat, that's your answer.

Six surgical-grade needles, up to 150 punctures/second

Fewer, sharper needles reduce surface trauma versus crowded needle plates that compress the skin before they penetrate.

19 depth settings in 0.1 mm increments

Scar remodeling, wrinkle treatment, and glow maintenance each happen at different depths — the precision is the treatment.

Sealed dual-membrane cartridge

Engineered to prevent any backflow into the handpiece — cross-contamination protection most pens simply don't have.

Low-vibration, quiet operation

Less rattle at the tip means a genuinely more comfortable session.

In the clinical study supporting its clearance, 85% of subjects showed visible improvement in facial acne scars after a four-session series — and no subject's scarring worsened.

Microneedling for acne scars

This is the concern microneedling was made for. Rolling and boxcar acne scars are collagen-deficit problems — depressions where healing fell short the first time. Microneedling re-opens the remodeling process on your terms: controlled depth, full-face coverage, session by session.

  • The evidence: the Exceed's acne-scar clearance is backed by study data showing visible improvement in 85% of subjects over four monthly sessions — with results that keep building for months after the series as collagen matures.
  • A realistic plan: most acne-scar patients start with 3–4 sessions about a month apart. Deep ice-pick scars may need combination approaches — an honest consult conversation, not a page promise.
  • Skin tones: microneedling doesn't target pigment — it's a mechanical treatment, which makes it a workhorse option for medium and deeper skin tones where aggressive lasers carry pigmentation risk. Settings and prep are still tailored to your skin at consult.

If scarring is your primary concern, also look at Pico Resolve — for some scar types and skin tones, picosecond laser or a combination plan wins. The consult exists to pick the right tool, not to sell you the one on this page.

The upgrade path: microneedling + PRP

Everything microneedling does, it does by triggering repair. PRP (platelet-rich plasma) supercharges that repair signal — your own growth factors, spun down from a quick blood draw and delivered into the open micro-channels while they're still receptive.

Who upgrades: acne-scar patients who want faster remodeling, anyone optimizing for recovery speed, and patients who've plateaued on standard microneedling. It's popular enough here that it has its own page — if you're deciding between the two, that's a two-minute consult question.

What a session is like (and the downtime truth)

Numbing first

Prescription-strength topical numbing for 20–30 minutes. The treatment itself feels like a light sandpaper vibration — most patients rate it easier than they expected.

The treatment

About 30–45 minutes for the full face; neck and other areas add time.

Immediately after

You'll look sunburned — bright pink, warm, and tight. That's the treatment working.

Downtime, honestly

Figure 24–48 hours of visible pinkness, possible mild flaking around day 2–3, and makeup back on within a day or two per your provider's instructions. Plan sessions at least a week before events; deeper scar-depth work can run a little longer.

Aftercare

Gentle cleanser, hydration, obsessive sunscreen, and no actives (retinoids, acids) for a few days. We send the full protocol home with you — and you can text us anytime with your “is this normal?” questions.

Is microneedling worth it?

Fair question, given the price spread between a mall-kiosk roller and a medical treatment. The honest answer has three parts:

  • The modality works. Collagen induction is one of the better-evidenced tools in aesthetics for texture, scars, and fine lines. This isn't a trend treatment.
  • Results are cumulative and delayed by design. You'll see a glow within days (plumping from the healing response), but the real remodeling shows at 4–12 weeks post-series as new collagen matures. One session is a preview; the series is the treatment.
  • The delta between providers is the whole game. Device quality, sterile technique, correct depth for your concern, and knowing when microneedling isn't the right tool — that's what you're actually buying. It's also why we put our device's FDA clearances in writing above.

Maintenance: after your series, most patients hold results with a session every 3–6 months. Skin keeps aging; the point is changing the slope.

Please don't buy the $30 derma roller

Same conversation we have about at-home skin-tag kits, so we'll be equally direct:

  • Home rollers can't reach treatment depth — and the ones that try are how people give themselves tract scarring, infections, and pigmentation problems.
  • Reused needles dull and tear rather than puncture cleanly. Dull needles plus bathroom sterility is the opposite of collagen induction.
  • No depth control, no technique, and no assessment of whether your specific concern is even a microneedling problem in the first place.

If budget is the driver, tell us at consult — a properly spaced professional series with maintenance beats a drawer full of rollers on both results and total cost.

Common questions

Does microneedling really work for acne scars?
Yes — it's one of the best-evidenced uses of the treatment. The Exceed device we use is FDA-cleared specifically for facial acne scars, with supporting study data showing visible improvement in 85% of subjects over a four-session series. Rolling and boxcar scars respond best; deep ice-pick scars may need a combination plan, which we'll tell you honestly at consult.
How much does microneedling cost in Portland?
Pricing is per session, with 3–4 session series packages priced below single visits and a PRP upgrade available as an add-on. You'll get an exact series quote at a free consultation — and GloLUX Rewards earns points on every session.
How many sessions do I need?
Most concerns respond to a series of 3–4 sessions spaced about a month apart, with results that keep improving for weeks afterward as new collagen matures. Acne scarring sits at the higher end; glow-and-texture maintenance at the lower end. After the series, a session every 3–6 months holds the result.
What's the downtime?
Expect to look sunburned for 24–48 hours, with possible light flaking a few days after. Most patients are back to normal routines (and makeup) within a day or two. Book at least a week ahead of anything photographed.
Does microneedling hurt?
With prescription topical numbing applied first, most patients describe it as a light sandpaper vibration — noticeably easier than they expected. The Exceed's low-vibration engineering genuinely helps here.
What's the difference between microneedling and RF microneedling?
Standard microneedling triggers collagen mechanically; RF microneedling adds radiofrequency heat through the needles for deeper tissue tightening. They solve overlapping but different problems — if skin laxity is your bigger concern, ask about SmoothGlo and our energy-based tightening options at consult, and we'll match the tool to the goal.
Is microneedling safe for darker skin tones?
Generally yes — and it's often the preferred texture treatment for deeper skin tones because it doesn't target pigment the way many lasers do. Your provider will tailor depth, prep, and aftercare to your skin, including pigmentation-protective protocols where appropriate.
Microneedling or PRP microneedling — how do I choose?
Start with your goal and timeline. Standard Exceed microneedling delivers the core collagen benefit; adding PRP concentrates your own growth factors into the treatment to accelerate remodeling and recovery. If you're treating established scarring or want maximum results per session, PRP is usually worth the upgrade — details on our PRP Microneedling page.
